Showtime has ordered a new black drama pilot that will be produced by Chicago Hip Hop legend and actor, Common. Plus to top that, south side Chicago native, Lena Waithe, the writer of the movie, Dear White People, is set to pen the script!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the currently untitled series is described as a coming-of-age story about a young black man “in which just growing up can be a matter of life and death.”
Showtime’s president David Nevins released this statement on the show:
“The two creative forces behind the show, both hailing from Chicago’s South Side, give this pilot an unparalleled authenticity. Lena Waithe is an extremely fresh, talented young writer with a unique voice and a deeply thoughtful perspective into the world where she grew up. I immediately gravitated to her script, which is emotional, funny, tragic and relevant, all at once. And, we are so fortunate to have artist and visionary Common for his first producing project in scripted television.”
With todays violence against blacks, and especially black males, this show is going to touch home for many generations to come.
